Creating visual representations of “what is going on” is a powerful way to explore systems. Pictures allow us to see the “whole” while simultaneously seeing the detail (see the Systems Thinking presentation for ideas). Therefore, patterns emerge and interconnections are clear. For this discussion, we will create a diagram to represent how you visualize the systems of globalization.
Globalization is a complex adaptive system. (See Moberg (2004).) It can only be understood fully as a system that is more than the sum of its parts. The complex interdependencies and connections lead to implications for all the parts of the system.
After viewing the film The Luckiest Nut in the World, develop a 1-page drawing, photograph, or cartoon of systems thinking that shows the systems that are inherent in globalization as represented by the story of the nut. Use your imagination here. Do not spend a lot of time thinking about what it is supposed to look like, simply let your ideas come to life. Use either of these methods:
Draw it by hand and scan it so it can be shared (if you have that capability).
Create a picture using any software you have.
