Dementia and mental health in later life
In a previous topic we learnt about normal cognitive changes in ageing and that memory loss is not a
normal part of ageing, but a symptom of an illness (Hooyman & Kiyak, 2005).
In this topic we will examine pathological changes in cognition (thinking) due to dementia and also the
symptoms and treatment of depression in older people. The first reading, from your text book gives a
comprehensive overview of dementia and mental health issues in later life.

In your next reading for this topic, Stokes notes that
‘While the prevailing cultural expectation still appears to be that mental infirmity is a normal feature
of later life, the reality is that when marked cognitive impairment and behavioural change occurs in
old age these are the result of disease. In other words, dementia is abnormal, not normal, and thus
its origins are pathological and not the inevitable outcome of being old.’
(Stokes, 2007, p. 1)
Dementia is not one disease but a collective name for a number of diseases, the most common of which
is Alzheimer’s Disease, but which also includes what Stokes refers to as ‘multi­infarct dementia’ but which
is more commonly known now as ‘vascular dementia’, dementia with Lewy bodies , fronto­temporal
dementias including Pick’s disease, prion dementias such as Creuzfeldt­Jakob disease and other
conditions causing brain degeneration such as Parkinson’s Disease and Huntington’s Disease.
