Conflicting Values in Antigone
Based upon our classroom viewing and discussion of scenes from the Sophocles play Antigone,
write an essay of approximately 1000 words that examines both the personal choices made by
the primary characters, Antigone and Creon, and the underlying social and cultural values that
appear to justify each character’s choices and decisions.
To begin, briefly identify these characters and their background, then describe the basic
elements of the conflict between the characters. What is the problem that has triggered the
conflict and what sequence of events has led up to this moment?
Next, systematically analyze the conflict in terms of conflicting values. The following questions
are the ones you should be considering as you carry out your analysis:
• What is the decision that Antigone is faced with? What are the concerns and perceived
obligations that press her to make the choices she makes?
• What is ethical reasoning does Antigone use to justify her decision and her actions?
• What underlying social or cultural values can you identify behind Antigone’s motivations?
What cultural context do they derive from?
• What are the concerns and perceived obligations that lead Creon to the initial decision
that has triggered the conflict with Antigone?
• What ethical reasoning does Creon use to justify his decisions and his actions?
• What sorts of underlying social or cultural values can you identify behind Creon’s
motivations? What cultural context do they derive from?
Conclude with a brief discussion of possible decision points at which either Antigone or Creon
might have chosen differently to avoid the grim outcome of their story. How easy or difficult do
you think those alternative choices would have been for them, given their investment in the
social and cultural values that form the backdrop to the choices we see them make? Can you
think of strategies, accommodations or gestures, on the part of either character, that might
have made one or more alternative choices easier to make?

Scoring
I will score the essay in sections, with the weight and requirements of the sections given below:
20%  ‐‐  Introduction:  identify the characters, their background, and the source of conflict
60%  ‐‐  Analysis:  identify the concerns and obligations, the reasoning and justifications, and
the underlying social and cultural values that drive each character’s actions
20%  ‐‐  Conclusion:  possible alternatives, with their respective obstacles or their potentially
enabling moves

I will assign each section a performance rating as shown below, then summarize the section
scores for an overall essay score:
Excellent (A to B+):  clear and thorough in all aspects, with fully developed support
Adequate (B to C):  basic and functional; necessary parts present, but not fully supported
Inadequate (C‐ to D‐):  sketchy or brief in presentation of analysis and/or intro and conclusion
Absent (F): no meaningful attempt or no submission

(Superior:  Cites one or both of the provided scholarly essays clearly and effectively to bolster
the analysis; worth up to 10% extra‐credit points.)
