Chapter 17 examines a number of pressing and controversial issues in mental health.
Choose one of these on which to express your views. Briefly summarize how this issue is presented in the textbook. Then, formulate your own perspective, argument, and conclusions utilizing at least two outside academic references (scholarly academic research journal articles) to support your position regarding this topic.
You may also explore a topic that was covered in the “Unresolved Issues” or “World Around Us” sections of any of the chapters in the text if they are considered pressing or controversial in any form. If you are aware of a controversial or pressing issue in the realm of mental health that is not covered in Chapter 17 that is of interest to you, please me send me an email to approve your topic. Make sure to do this before Wednesday if you want approval on a different topic. 🙂
Pick a topic that truly interests you. Remember this is a Discussion Essay Post (minimum of 1000 words, etc. as was required in Module 4!! It is worth 100 points; therefore, you will lose more points for posting late, not including at least two academic journal articles as references, etc.)
Topics to possibly explore not mentioned in the text include:
The over-diagnosis and medicating of children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders.
Physician-assisted suicide as an option for the chronically mentally ill that struggle despite trying every available treatment.
Lack of available resources for the accurate diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders.
Mental health professionals choosing to not work with suicidal clients. What are the consequences for those in crisis?
An exploration of a mental health system driven by the insurance companies and managed care (profit) rather than the most appropriate treatment modalities for the individual. Medications are often not the best treatment for most disorders for a variety of reasons.
Lack of mental health resources for veterans and active military.
The use of psychogenic mushrooms, MDMA, and marijuana as therapeutic treatment options in conjunction with psychotherapy for a variety of mental disorders.
Is forced treatment of severely mentally ill individuals justifiable?
Should individuals with Anorexia Nervosa have the right to refuse life-sustaining treatment?
Must mentally ill murderers have a rational understanding of why they are being sentenced to death?
If you choose a topic from the text, once again do not regurgitate and summarize the information. Search for outside academic resources on the topic as is required to share new information and perspectives with all of us to help make our final discussion more engaging for all of us.
