Helpful Tip: If you are struggling with just one or two of the social forces heres something to think about. For gender, race, and class, what are the dominant and minority groups for each? Are you a dominant group member for one of the categories? This can potentially be a reason why its harder to think of its impact on your identity. If you fall into the categories of male (or cisgendersomeone who identities with one of the two traditional gender categories), white, or middle class and higher, ask yourself the following questions: what benefits come as a result of that status (trying to separate it from the other categories)? What disadvantages might someone have if they are in the minority group for that category? What makes that distinction clear? How do we become aware of these differences? (Often times because we occupied the default status, our experiences seem ordinary. But we are each anything but ordinary! We are all unique; and all of these factors have had an impact on each of our identities, though some may be more powerful than others. Your level of analysis for these categories will really show that youre able to use your sociological imagination.)
