Lesson: Rights and Duties in Ethical Decision-Making
Section IV of the Analysis of Ethical Decision-Making questionnaire is devoted to identifying where rights and duties lie in the situation surrounding an ethical dilemma. Understanding the limits placed on our choices by the rights that certain stakeholders may have, and the duties that other stakeholders must perform in order to honor those rights, is a critical part of making ethical decisions. In this lesson, we will look at how relationships among stakeholders confer both rights and duties. We will continue to explore the role of power in assessing ethical behavior by looking at the nature of power in organizations and how it affects business transactions.
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
1. Appreciate the role that legitimate rights and duties play in ethical dilemmas.
2. Describe how rules correct power imbalances between stakeholders.
3. Identify stakeholder rights and duties, where they come from, and how they figure in resolving ethical dilemmas.
