Just as this course is multifaceted in its approach, so too might the final project be. You may, for example, submit a somewhat traditional research project which analyzes one of the works which appear on our syllabus (The Pleasure of the Text). You will engage substantively with the theories/approaches to textuality which have driven the class discussion over the course of the semester. As you choose your final project, you should consider not only your interests, but also the potential outcomes of such a project.

Write a rather traditional research project covering a major work or theoretical question. Should you choose this approach, I would expect you to write an essay of around 10-12 pages, one that is sufficiently focused, and that considers 8-10 secondary sources in addition to whatever primary source(s) you choose. This essay should either focus on an author, work (The Pleasure of the Text – in my case), or central motivating question which has animated our class.

Research papers cannot contain errors of spelling, grammar, or punctuation. PROOFREAD carefully.

Come up with a CREATIVE title. I am sick of seeing titles such as, “Emily Dickinson Paper”, really?

Use quotes and in text citations. However, no more than 33% of your paper can be cited material. You can’t just string together a bunch of quotes to make a paper. Percentages will be determined by Turnitin on Blackboard.

Be sure to deeply analyze; but do not forget to research a ton. I recommend using direct quotes from the text, and really tearing them down. What do these texts mean? Think outside the box. Be creative; we are studying English writers and theorists. Use analytical research that assists you in becoming an expert on the author and work that you chose. Do not bore me, enlighten me. Bring up new ideas. Think deep. Think deep. RESEARCH.

Be crafty in your papers. We are not history majors. Don’t bore me. Educate me. Open my mind. This final piece will be graded much more difficult than anything we have done in class thus far and is 60 percent of your grade.
