Details of assessment

A dissertation is a substantial piece of written work (in the case of this module 7000 words plus or minus a maximum 10% margin) based on the student’s own research using primary and/or secondary data collection and analysis. The student determines both the focus and direction of the research and carries out all aspects of the project individually under the guidance and support of a supervisor. The fact that the module requires a consistent and rigorous engagement of the student throughout most of the academic year indicates the greater depth and level of input necessary to complete this work in relation to other assignments that you will undertake. A dissertation should:

• Make an argument
• Present evidence in support of that argument
• Carry out a sustained discussion of the topic
• Explore the topic in detail in relation to existing published work
• Bring together issues of theory, method and methodology in relation to the chosen topic of research.
