Topic: This is an essay about your personal experiences with oppression and privilege, as we have discussed in class. These experiences can be about race, class, gender, religion, sexuality, ethnicity, health, mental issues, nationality, genetics, language, and any of the other ways people utilize privilege and oppression. You can get as personal as you feel comfortable, telling a narrative that spans your entire life, a portion of your life, or even just your experience in college. You get to choose.

 

This is a reflection paper. The goal of the assignment is to apply the readings to your own experiences and see them through a new or different or more informed lens. How do these readings change your understanding of your experiences? You must relate your experiences to at least FOUR readings from class. Use specific quotes from our readings. I expect you to cite the reading properly (tell me the full name of the author, the title of the article/reading, and use MLA format. I expect you to have a works cited or bibliography where you have correctly cited the four or more articles we have read in class. I also expect correct in-text citations.

 

You will also be graded on how well you understood the reading correctly. I want you to prove to me that you know the point the author is making and to summarize that point in your paper.

 

Length:  At least five full pages of text.  Please attach an MLA style Works Cited list, which does not count as a text page.

 

Format:  Typed, double-spaced 12 pt. font – Times New Roman.

 

 

Caution:  Any passages of dialogue or text are taken word-for-word from one of your sources must be enclosed in quotation marks.  Each of these quoted passages must have its very own MLA in-text citation.  In addition, any paraphrases, summaries, or ideas taken from your sources but subsequently put into your own words must have their very own MLA in-text citations.  Paraphrases, summaries, or ideas do not need quotation marks, just the in-text citations.  If a paper is plagiarized, it will receive a failing grade.
