Multimodal transportation

The multimodal transportation system has led to significant improvement of movement of products from one place to the other. A multimodal transport system involves having a single contract through which all carriers conduct their operations. Multimodal Transport Operators (MTO) is in charge of the carrier system whereby all the other modes of transport seek transport documents from the MTO. In Singapore, the multimodal transportation system is managed by the Registry of Accredited Multimodla Transport Operators (Pearson & Merkert 2014).

The multimodal transportation system has brought significant benefits in the transport industry especially in terms of cargo movement. One of the advantages of Multimodal transport system is that the whole liability is kept upon the MTO. Since different modes of transport are under the charge of MTO, the MTO is forced to ensure maximum safety and effectiveness in its operations in order to improve the performance network. This is usually ensured by hiring highly competent staffs that are well versed with international transport procedures (Pearson & Merkert 2014). Working together is not only beneficial to the customers but also to the industry. Working together as a single carrier has improved communication networks and enhanced interaction of different networks across the world. Networking and open sharing of information is also important for management purposes in addition to incorporating new strategies for improving performance in the entire transport (Pant et al 2011).

According to Marzuoli et al (2013), multimodal transport has led to efficiency in the movement of cargo. This has been achieved through the improvement in freight forwarding process combined with strong collaboration of the different players in the industry. The uniting of sub-carriers in a single MTO brings in the idea of collaborative decision making process. Because of their common goal of reaching wider……
