Please note: THERE ARE THREE (3) assignments below. Make sure you complete all of them.

One of the trademarks of more advanced research is to begin to really understand the overall “playing field” of your topic. You want to be able to show to your audience that you know who the major thinkers or writers are. That you have done your homework. That you are credible.

When you are doing smaller and more basic research projects, you might be able to get away with looking at a couple sources to support your ideas. But at the Thesis and Degree Project level, you want to demonstrate a better understanding of your subject matter. While you can’t necessarily become familiar with every perspective on your subject matter, you can at least become familiar with a few of them.

As you have done your research, hopefully, you are beginning to notice that some names appear over and over again. Maybe this person appears by themselves at times, and with other writers/designers at other times. See if you can ferret out FIVE (5) individuals who seem to have had major input into your relevant subject matter.

Note:  I say “relevant” subject matter. This does NOT mean you should just pick who seem to be the five biggest/most well known thinkers in your given topic. Some of these general topics are HUGE. You could pick out five big names and they could all be talking about material that has nothing to do with your focus.  That will not be helpful to you.

Pick out five perspectives that seem to be most relevant to the focus you are working on.  They do NOT need to agree with each other. In fact, it is usually more interesting when you have some disagreement. Including opinions that seem to be opposite anything YOUR are saying/thinking!

Please do the following:

Part 1:  Source Survey
1) Write out YOUR working thesis on your subject.  Ideally this is the perspective/attitude that YOU have about your topic.  This can be one sentences. It does not have to be overly complicated. Just provide a general sense of what you think you are trying to prove/show. This should be an assertion or a statement. Do not make it a question.
2) Select one passage from each of your thinkers/authors. It can be as short as a sentence or as long as a full paragraph. This passage should offer some sort of perspective/attitude that this thinker/writer has about the topic in question. Cut-and-paste that passage into your assignment.

(The idea is we see your perspective side-by-side with other perspectives from the field. Are you saying something similar? Something different? How do you your ideas begin to relate to others? Are you in agreement/disagreement with anyone?)

3) Provide a brief denotative description for each of the five passages. Citation. Who is the author? Any contextual information that might help us understand what we are reading. Keep this brief.

4) Write a 75-150 word connotative response to each passage you pick. Why did you select this passage? Why did you select this perspective? How does this relate to what you are saying/investigating? What other reactions do you have to this particular passage?

Part 2: Graphic Review 
When you start to do a “survey” of who is saying what about a topic – like I ask you to do above — you are doing what is called a Literature Review.

Literature Reviews are mandatory parts of most/all Theses and dissertations. They are often exhaustive, covering dozens of sources and discussing them at great length.

The responses you did in part 1 give us a general framework for a Literature Review. Rather than formulate it into an essay at this moment, I want you to think about a way to MAP IT OUT. By that I mean spatially lay out the thinkers you selected AND yourself on a sheet of paper. How do the ideas (including yours) spatially relate to each other? This can be done as a map, some sort of chart or diagram, or something completely different and original. Please see the folder with a variety of sample Graphic Literature Reviews. Each has an explanation of what makes that sample effective/ ineffective.  Any approach is fine. Do not feel limited by the samples. If you have a different way to do it, by all means use it!

THE IMPORTANT THING HERE: YOU MUST INCLUDE YOURSELF ON THE MAP/CHART SOMEWHERE! The purpose of this exercise is to picture yourself on this disciplinary playing field. Where do you stand? (Or do you have a stand? If you don’t, then that is a great thing for us to talk about.)


Part 3: Complete Annotated Bibliography
