Term Paper Guideline:
Length: 1500-2000 words (6-8 pages)
Topic: You are responsible for designing your own topic; your approach must meet the following criteria, all equally important:
The paper must involve discussion of at least one of the required texts (IN THIS CASE, I have picked the HUNGER GAMES) Comparative papers should treat no more than three texts. Your approach should be clearly justified, and should not overwhelm or replace analysis of the text(s).
While you must focus on at least one required text, you may make comparative reference to relevant texts not on the set list.
While interdisciplinary approaches are welcome, the paper itself should be positioned primarily within literary/cultural studies.
The paper must involve secondary research, using at least three academic sources. Primary texts (i.e. novels, films) do not count as research material. All secondary sources should be appropriate for a senior undergraduate paper.
Your argument must be reasonable, so that even readers who disagree with your approach to the text(s) can consider the validity of your argument intellectually. Your argument cannot be premised on appeals to taste, emotional response, or beliefs/values/morals (see Developing an Argument below).
Your analysis should go beyond the level of class discussion. Choose a topic that you are passionate and excited about pursuing in depth. Format:
This paper is to be double-spaced, single-sided, and approximately 1500-2000 words in length
Use size 12 standard font with generous margins all around
Citation and documentation must conform to current MLA format
Give your paper an appropriate and informative title
Identify your name and student number in the document and number all pages
Include a title page
ADVICE ON DEVELOPING AN ARGUMENT
Your term paper topic, and subsequently your argument or thesis, should arise from a close critical reading and analysis of the text(s) on which your paper will focus. Your paper does not have to deal exhaustively with all aspects of the text(s), and will instead focus on, and deal in depth with, specific elements of structure, style, and/or content. Your argument should be academic in nature, and even if your paper takes an interdisciplinary approach, it should be primarily focused on and situated within literary studies. As well, it should be a reasonable argument of a level of sophistication suitable for a 400-level course.
