The purpose of this assignment is to facilitate your abilities to research a topic of study of your choice
that is related to understanding health promotion, illness & disease, or health-related inequalities
from a geographical perspective. To do this you will write a 2500 word paper (approximately 10
double spaced pages, excluding bibliography). Ensure you consult the attached rubric at the end of
this document so that you have an even better understanding of how you will be evaluated.
A Literature Review is a coherent essay that reviews the existing state of knowledge on a particular
topic, issue or problem. Throughout this term assignment some of the skills that you will cultivate
include being able to:
identify and formulate an inquiry question or topic that defines what you’d like to learn
how to search and locate literature (e.g. Journal articles, grey literature) using library and
analyze and critique research articles and knowledge sources;
communicate your understanding of geographical concepts (e.g. space, place, location,
distance, scale, population composition, accessibility, inclusion/exclusion, etc.) and how they
integrate information across multiple articles and identify the state of knowledge (i.e. what do
we know, what do we not know, what remains uncertain, what recommendations can be
made to fill existing knowledge gaps, and how?, etc.).
