I want to put emphasis on using appropriate academic sources, APA formatting, writing clarity, and the ability to synthesize information into a thoughtful and cohesive paper
The work must be above average and truly exceptional. The paper:
1. It not only fulfills the assignment but does so in a fresh and mature way. The paper is exciting to read; it accommodates itself well to its intended audience.
2. The evidence is detailed and used persuasively and where appropriate; citations are used effectively where appropriate and are formatted correctly.
3. The organization gives the reader a sense of the necessary flow of the argument or explanation. Paragraphs are fully developed and follow naturally from what precedes them; the conclusion reinforces the readers confidence in the writers control of the argument. Organizational guides are used as appropriate.
4. The prose is clear, apt, and occasionally memorable. The paper contains few, if any, errors of grammar, mechanics, word choice or expression, none of which undermines the overall effectiveness of the paper.
5. Try not to write sentences in the passive voice. With the active voice, the subject performs the action. This style can provide more clarity, brevity, responsibility, or certainty than passive voice. In the passive voice, the actions are performed upon the subject by someone or something else. When the subject is more important than the actor, the passive voice is a useful style. If the active voice makes sense, use it.

Even though you are all likely dreading this week, I want to make you aware of some FUN ways to use correlations: http://www.tylervigen.com/spurious-correlations. I love this site because it helps me to think about correlations in (a) new ways but also (b) think about the trends. For example, my favorite one is attached below. For example, look at 2003. Both experienced a decline from the trend. What happened in 2003 Was it colder than normal that summer Or, rainier than normal That might explain how there were less pool deaths based on lower pool use, and lower electric demand because Air Conditioning may not have been needed. Just a guess. So, then I looked for weather patterns in 2003 and found this: http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/research/2003/ann/ann03.html. 2003 was in fact cooler than average in some places. So, there may be some relevance to these seemingly spurious correlations. It’s not pure science but it gives us insight into how the numbers work. Bottom line: have fun with your statistics.

Yes, data analysis can be intimidating; however, remember this: certain actions in your study will lend to certain types of analysis. If you are performing a comparison, the t-test is ideal. Correlations deserve the Pearson r. Category or thematic analysis deserves the Chi square. Always consult example peer-reviewed journal articles for proper structure and content.
