Seth Barrett story

A manufacturing operations management trend that I chose to research for this discussion is the exponential generation of leadership, along with the trend of using technology and mobile communication tools.  I see these two things as going together because the younger generations have grown up with technology.  The millennial generation, people born from 1980-1999, are preparing to take over leadership roles in the business world.  The following generation, those with birthdates around the turn of the millennia and are just starting college and technical schools, are the people who manufacturers need to be aware of.  There is a trend that this generation of people do not know a world without technology, including the Internet, smart phones, and even AI intelligence.  The knowledge and that this generation will have on technology will exceed the knowledge that millennials hold.  According to Gold (2019), “their skillsets and the 21sst-century leadership style will be needed to help U.S. manufactures compete globally in the coming decades” (para. 14).  Technology is continually advancing; therefore, it is important for management to be knowledgeful and confident in the growing and changing technological aspects of the manufacturing world.

Most businesses are considered behind if their internal communications and business operations are not mobile.  This can be true whether the industry is mobile for sales, targeting consumers, or because the industry is technology related.  Being accessible on a mobile level offers the benefits of thorough insight along with quick data retrieval and communications (3 Trends for Operations Management, 2020).

The generation of people who are currently learning about management and leadership will be a benefit to almost any manufacturing company.  The trend of using technology and being online is strong and will continue to advance.  Management must also keep up with the growing technological needs, therefore a generation that has always known technology will hold a lot of value to a company that wants to be successful in the future, especially on a global level.

Real-time monitoring will continue to progress beyond light sticks and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to WiFi and Internet of Things (loT) sensors. Real-time monitoring creates a contextually rich stream of data that provides insights into product quality, machine performance, machine yields and holds clues to solving many manufactures most challenging problems. 81% of manufacturers say real time monitoring is improving their businesses today, according to  the latest IQMS survey. The survey also found that manufacturers growing 10% s year or more are early adopters of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags and the Internet of Things sensors, capturing data streams at a higher accuracy level than manual methods. 72% streamline and make inventory reconciliation more efficient. 69% greater accuracy tracking various measures, and 63% better track machine utilization, scrap, and downtime reporting.
