  1. In the “Emperor” quartet, what did you notice about the theme in all of the variations? If the theme is not ever changed (which your book mentions), then what is being varied? Which are your favorite variations?

 

  1. Beethoven’s Symphony no. 7, movement 2 is actually in a double theme and variationform. The first theme, which is a dark and ominous melody, lasts from 0:00-3:35, after which a second theme, which is more lyrical that enters at 3:335-5:00 comes in. After that, Theme 1 (variation) returns until Theme 2 (variation) comes in at 7:13. Theme 1 (variation) makes it final statement at 7:56. Of these two themes, which one do you like more? Why? Do you notice any similarity between the two different themes? What are they?
