 “Ideology is a set of social values, ideas, beliefs,
feelings, and representations by which people
collectively make sense of the world they live in,
thus constituting a world view” (O’ Shaughnessy
and Stadler, Media and Society, OUP,2005:152)
 Ideologies are seen as ‘natural’ and unchangeable,
appear or talked about as ‘inevitable’
 Different types of ideologies (meaning systems) e.g.
Political, Social, economic, educational etc.
 Ideologies are present in language, texts, imagesrepresentations,
institutions,
practices,
belief
and

value
systems,
media
and
our
identities

 Media producing, reproducing and disseminating
ideologies
