Case Study – Seven-step ethical decision making

Order Description
Assignment
This is a writing assignment/case analysis in which you will apply the ethical decision making model that is described in Glover (2006) and outlined below. The cases are very short so you do not have a lot of facts to work with. For that part of the ethical decision making model (step 2), you should focus on facts that you need to gather to make a decision. Here is what you need to do:

1.Read the assigned readings and choose a case study from the three below.

2.Apply the seven-step ethical decision making model below to one of the cases below and write it up. You can use whatever format you want, but you must clearly show all seven steps. There is a sample matrix on page 50 of Glover (2006). Your finished product should be at least 650 words, not including citations, references and the case.

o Case 1 — You work in a busy multi-specialty clinic with a high patient volume. The physicians enter the type of code that will yield the greatest reimbursement. You suspect the codes are not accurate.

o Case 2 — You discover that a co-worker has learned your password and accessed an EHR of a celebrity patient who is HIV positive.

o Case 3 — You work for SRQ. Inc, a CPOE vendor. Provencian Health Systems, your client is being investigated for a medical error involving one of your systems and resulting in the death of an infant. The error began when a pharmacy technician entered the wrong value into an information field in the system, then an automated machine prepared the IV solution, and finally delivered a dose 100 times the amount ordered by the physician. The built-in alerts were ignored because they were so frequent and not especially useful.

After running your analysis on one of the above case studies you will answer the following general question:

1. What organizational values are promoted through the implementation of health information technology

2. Which of those values are aligned with clinician and patient values and which are not

3. We are looking for you to cite sources that add to the flavor of the discussion. Your unsubstantiated opinion will not suffice. Also, when giving examples, please try to provide examples other than what you found in the assigned readings.

Ethical Decision Making Model

As a practical tool for ethical analysis, ethical decision-making models have been widely promoted. There are many variations of these models. The one presented below is discussed in detail in the Glover reading (2006, pp. 35-38 and 46-50).

Model of ethical decision-making

1.What is the ethical question
2.What are the facts
3.What are the values at stake in this scenario
4.What are the options
5.What should I do
6.What justifies my choice
7.How can this problem be avoided
