Assignment: Critical Thinking in Intercollegiate Athletics: Should College Football Be
Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to use critical thinking skills to analyze a topic in
intercollegiate athletics and create an analytical essay that expresses your views on this topic.
Task: Consider the following questions about intercollegiate athletics in the United States:
“Should College Football be Banned?
View these questions from a sport management perspective. To assist you in your
analysis, view a debate hosted by Intelligence Squared in the spring of 2012 between writers
Buzz Bissinger and Malcolm Gladwell versus former NFL player, attorney, writer, coach, and
broadcaster Tim Green and sportswriter Jason Whitlock entitled “Ban College Football.”

View the debate. As you watch the debate, jot down notes that may help you in writing
your analytic essay.
2. Take a stand. Develop your own conclusion about the issue posed, and compose a twopage analytic essay that supports whether or not you think college football should be
banned. Use the following questions that we addressed in chapter one to analyze your
own reasoning, assumptions, and evidence.
