Short Writing Assignment 2
Write a one-page analysis of two paragraphs and one final sentence (double space, go more than a page if you need to). NOTE: the Argument is last, after you read and analyze the song.
- Paragraph 1: BRIEFLY describe the source and give the CONTEXT (relevant aspects of the who-what-when-where-why) in which the source was generated.
This is factual information, that summarizes for a reader what the source is about, who the actors are, what is happening (i.e., “it is a song about . . .”; “these are first person narratives about. . .”), and locates the source in a particular historical era, the era of the chapter you’ve read.
- Paragraph 2: ANALYZE the song. What is its significance? What do the lyrics mean? What social issues/concerns does the song reflect?
- Paragraph 3, MAKE AN ARGUMENT: Advances an argument about the song. What does it tell us about how (some) people experienced changes after World War I?
The argument should make a claim or take a stand, be arguable (it could generate discussion or be disagreed with by some people), and be specific about the song and not about events in general at the time.
