Description of the Work of Art
The structure was made up of a central nave measuring 25 x 80 meters and supported by 3 groin-vaults suspended about 120 feet above the ground on 4 massive piers, with a huge statue of Emperor Constantine in the western end. The tangential pressures exerted by the groin vaults were balanced by creating several aisles measuring 75 feet by 56 feet. The passageways were spanned by 3 crescent barrel-vaults vertical to the nave.
Who, where and when
The initial construction of this massive structure commenced under the great Roman Emperor Maxentius around 308 Anno Domino (Current Era) in the Romans forum eight in Rome. The construction however was not completed during the reign of Emperor Maxentius, who was overthrown after war in Rome, although its massive nature could be seen.
